Man’s chief end is to glorify God

Man’s chief end is to glorify God

What is the chief and highest end of man?

Ans: Man’s chief and highest end is to glorify God, and fully to enjoy him forever.

Rom. 11:36. For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory forever. Amen.

It is always striking to me that our shorter catechism starts with a reflection on man’s chief end being the enjoying of God. There is a lot we think about in terms of relating to God as Christians. Yes, we know we relate to God by his grace, through Jesus Christ. Yes we know we are to worship him, to glorify him, and to be his witnesses in all the world. But I think we often overlook the reality that God created us, in his image, to enjoy him.

Through Christ Jesus, we have been given access to the Holy of Holies, which is the dwelling place of God in heaven. God wants us to know him, as he truly is, and to enjoy him. To enjoy the life he’s given us, and to walk with him in that enjoyment. And the promise to us as believers, is that one day we will be without any sin at all, and we will experience never ending joy in the presence of Almighty God. Now that’s really good news!
